The microwave oven is one of the most useful appliances in our modern kitchens. Its convenience and speed of cooking make it a popular choice for households and restaurants. However, many people do not know that microwaves are absorbed by food and can cause harm to the body when exposed in large doses.
Microwaves are electromagnetic waves with a frequency of 80 to 800 MHz. They are produced by FM radio and television broadcasting antennas, mobile phones and their base stations and microwave links as well as cordless phones, terrestrial trunked radios and blue tooth devices. This radiation can be detected by placing two filter grids with different orientations between the source and the detector. When the two filters are oriented 90@ w.r.t each other (“crossed” polarizers), no radiation passes through.
When the microwaves hit the water molecules in your food, they start spinning and frictionally rubbing against them. This energy causes the water molecules to heat up and vaporize, which cooks your food. The same effect occurs in the cosmos, giving us the background static we can hear on our phones and radios, as well as a clue to the Big Bang.
